Almost a decade ago, I started a new competition in Denmark which was supposed to do away with all the bartender competitions which were characterized by nepotism and not least product placement (branding).
For too long, bartenders could prepare in advance, putting some at a marked advantage over others.
There had also been inflation in pure “brand” competition. No longer were the bartenders challenged when, for a better word, they “just” had to compete in a “bombay gin” competition

About Freestyle Mixology
Freestyle Mixology is a fairly simple but difficult competition.
Up to 24 selected bartenders will compete in taste, speed and innovation. Bartenders are given a random “Mystery Box” whose contents are unknown. The bartenders are divided into different heats. At each heat, the bartenders have 20 min. to open the box, taste, test and think about it, after which they have 7 min. to make 4 cocktails.
After all bartenders have gone through, 4 finalists will be chosen. The 4 will compete again, but this time they must not open ‘the mystery box’ until they have chosen a base spirit. That is they don’t know the contents of the box when they choose their spirits.
After this, the 20+7 minutes start again, after which a winner is chosen.
Freestyle Mixology is an innovative competition that challenges bartenders to think tastefully and creatively. Freestyle Mixology has become one of the most popular competitions in Denmark.
