Challenge
Almost a decade ago the competition was started to do away with bartender competitions characterised by nepotism and product placement, where bartenders could prepare in advance and where 'brand' competitions no longer challenged anyone.
Approach
Up to 24 selected bartenders compete in taste, speed and innovation. Bartenders receive a random mystery box whose contents are unknown, split into heats: 20 minutes to open, taste, test and think, then 7 minutes to make 4 cocktails.
Delivery
Four finalists are chosen and compete again — but this time they must choose a base spirit before opening the mystery box, after which the 20+7 minutes start again and a winner is chosen. The 2022 edition ran on 17 September, 13.00–21.00, at Copenhagen Distillery.
Outcome
Freestyle Mixology has become one of the most popular bartender competitions in Denmark.
